I recently attended a networking event in Coventry and it was an enjoyable experience. It was a great chance to meet like-minded individuals who might have a need for my services. Not only that, but it was also interesting to learn about other creative business. I spoke to photographers, a dancer and a singer and the stories they were telling were very intriguing.
Networking is great because you can pitch yourself directly to a prospective client, which immediately starts a relationship. You won't always walk away with a deal, but at least you have put yourself out there. The Coventry event I mentioned above was very informal and relaxed, which put my nerves at ease! The less anxious you are, the better chance you have at showing your personality.
Of course, there is a fair bit of preparation you need to do beforehand. make sure you have a clear picture about what you'd like to get from the networking event. Revise your elevator pitch and be clear about what it is you are offering. And it goes without saying, but have business cards or examples of your work ready to show off and hand out. Take pride in what you do!
Finally, networking should be fun! It's a chance for you to go where the clients are and start a working relationship. Sending emails is all well and good, but there is a lot to be said for a face-to-face conversation. The most important tip I've learnt from my networking experience is be yourself and enjoy the occasion.
